Making of The Crafty Rascal Bow Tie Photo Shoot at Ocean Beach

Making of, Bow Ties and SquaresCrafty RascalComment

On Saturday TheCraftyRascal had the opportunity to work with an amazing  photographer John Huseby and talented models at Ocean Beach to photograph the new CraftyRascal Bow Tie Line.

I started at 7 am getting several boxes of pastries from the Mr.Holmes bakehouse and coffee from Philz to make sure our photographer and models are well nourished.

Setting Up

Once I got to the beach John and his assistant Mike were already set up, testing out the lights and setting up the filters and all the other fancy instruments that made me feel yet again that I chose the right photographer for the job. I met John kite surfing about a year back. He was on the beach taking photos of some of our friends. I saw his skill in action photographs of kiters - paying attention to the composition, the lighting the subject. He really captured the essence of the sport and I immediately knew that if one day I needed a professional photographer it would be John. Checkout some of his kite and surf photography here.

Before the models get there, setting up the shirts bow ties and pocket squares

Capturing the Essence

I needed to get photos that showcase the careful craftsmanship that goes into a CraftyRascal bow tie. Each is hand made in our studio in New York from hand selected fabrics ranging from Italian silk for a self tie bow tie stunner and matching pocket square, to fun print monster cotton for a boys bow tie that are safe for the little ones fastened with velcro.

On top of this the photo shoot was to capture what I call #CaliforniaDapper. The look that moves easily from neoprene hoodie and jeans, to hipster cool with vest, beard and glasses, to full suit evening out elegant. For this we chose Ocean Beach as the location. Here on any given day you can see kiters, surfers dog walkers and joggers enjoying the northern California coastline. Along with the occasional odd event such as our CraftyRascal Bow Tie Photo Shoot. We even got asked "Is there someone famous?"

Living the Lifestyle

All the models are friends of TheCraftyRascal and embody CaliforniaDapper. They are professionals that have come from all over the world to call California their home. They are tinkerers, dreams and doers that have more than one passion in this world. They are the kind of people you would love to have as your friend as they will push you and inspire you to go beyond your comfort zone. They know how to have a good time and look DAMN GOOD in a bow tie.

Enjoy the making of TheCraftyRascal Bow Tie Photo Shoot video. We had a blast!

As you saw tying a bow tie requires some street cred, a two person team and an educational youtube video. So here is a cute video with the catchy theme song of how to so you can be a pro next time.

Striped Hat featured in Bay Area Artists

BlogCrafty RascalComment

It's getting cold outside. No wonder the Bay Area Artists blog just featured The Crafty Rascal striped pixy alpaca hat on their blog on February 3rd.

We’re still in those chilly winter months and today’s Item of the Day is something that will keep you warm…or at least keep your head warm!”
— Bapa

If this one is not your style check out the other knits. That or send me a message so I can create something super unique just for you.

Here is a look at the 2014 Winter Collection.

Each knit is uniquely ours. We find the best quality yarns from alpaca, mohair, mix of tie die yarns and hypoallergenic acrylics in order to deliver a collection of quality knits for  a customer that values quality material and craftsmanship in one item. Each knit is hand knit especially for you in New York. Thus if you ever have a special request we would be obliged to work with you.

Alpaca - is a natural fiber harvested from an alpaca without hurting the animal. It can range from heavy weight to light depending on how it is spun together. A luxurious yarn it is similar to wool but tends to be warmer and without the prickliness which makes it hypoallergenic like the synthetic acrylic fiber. For alpaca knits check here

Wool - is a natural fiber that is harvested from sheep without hurting the animal. It can have different weaves including the delicate cashmere, playful mohair and heavier weaves as well. The weave crimp retains air making it very warm. For wool knits check here.

Acrylic - is a synthetic fiber made from a polymer. It is strong, warm and hypoallergenic making it an ideal everyday wears material that does not require hand washing. For acrylic knits check here.

Anniversary Gift for My Husband

Crafty RascalComment
I have a cork from my engagement - and I would love to make cuff links for him out of the cork and give it to him for our wedding present. Would I be able to send you the cork and have you use that?
— Mary

I often get requests like the one above from my customers.  A wine cork is a tremendously sentimental token of a special moment you shared together. You still remember the moment you opened that bottle of wine or popped the cork on the bubbly. You saved the cork because the bottle was too big and now years later your fingers stumble upon it in your drawer. You rummage through the corners of your brain and then.... a smile comes across your face as you remember that moment. If this sounds like you and you do not want your precious cork to be back in the drawer contact me to turn it into a unique wearable gift that your loved one will treasure

If you are not the saving kind and preferred to live in the moment and forgot to save your cork. Do not fret I make a special edition of vintage wine cork cufflinks to commemorate a specific year of an anniversary or an engagement. These come from authentic vintner stamped wine corks. The vintner stamps the year the wine was bottled onto the wine cork. What makes these wine cufflinks extremely unique is that each stamp is different and can sometimes be on a white or a red wine stained cork so no pair is ever the same. 2015 is the year many are celebrating their fifth year anniversary and what better gift than a 2010 vintner stamped wine cork cufflink set. Don't see the year you are interested in the collection, contact me and I'll see what we can do, I often have different cork, or can engrave or wood burn the year in the cork.

Wedding anniversaries, however, are not the only occasions customers save corks from or gift the vintage cufflinks. One customer was celebrating the year they partnered to start a new business.

The cufflinks were beautiful. Totally original and make an amazing gift. It was for my business partner who shares the love of cufflinks and wine. And 2007 was the year we partnered up and our favorite year for cabs! Thank you so much! Such a unique and amazing gift. He loved them!!!

I have also found that since introducing beer cufflinks into my store customers have associations with specific breweries where they and their loved ones had a special moment. That or their hubby just likes that brewery or the beer. From first dates to special christmas gifts the brewery cufflinks have captured special moments in my customer's lives and I am grateful to play a part.

These cufflinks are perfect! My fiance and I had our first date at the Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, so it is a very special place for us...I cannot wait to give him these on our wedding day! I was so excited when I found these...and they look even more sharp and amazing in person!

Whatever your moment and your beverage of choice take a look at the Crafty cufflinks collection and if you do not find what you are looking for email me or leave a comment so we can get started on a customer pair recycled from your beverage of choice.

TheCraftyRascal donates to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Second Year in a Row

TheCraftyRascal is hard at work making Heavy Seas cufflinks to be given as rewards for donors that give over $1000 to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation at the Brewers Ball this year on March 7th 2015. Last year TheCraftyRascal donated twenty pairs of cufflinks to be awarded to patrons that donate  one thousand dollars or more. The cufflink gift were such a caveated gift that the foundation raised $26,000 instead and TheCraftyRascal made more cufflink sets for the patrons. This year TheCraftyRascal was asked to donate 30 sets of cufflinks. Feels great to help get $30,000 in donations for the second year in a row working with this worthy foundation. I hope that 30 pairs is not enough and that I will be asked to make more.

WHY:    Imagine struggling for every breath you take – something most people don’t have to think twice  about. For most, breathing is a voluntary act, the simple process of inhaling and exhaling to produce  oxygen in the brain. For those with cystic fibrosis (CF), this simple act is a daily battle.

The CF Foundation is the world’s leader in the  search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. We take great  pride in being one of the most efficient and effective organizations of our kind, and are careful stewards of  every dollar raised in support of our mission. Through  our venture philanthropy model, we are able to invest in promising CF research to develop a robust pipeline of  potential therapies that target the disease from every angle.

The most recent example of the success of the CF  Foundation’s model is Kalydeco, the first drug to treat the  genetic defect causing CF. While Kalydeco is a breakthrough in  CF research and development, this drug works for only 4% of our CF population. Real progress toward a cure has been made, but the lives  of young people with CF are still cut far too short. We  urgently need the public’s continued support to fulfill our mission and help extend the lives of those with the disease.

Our work is not yet done. Help us to assure that all people with CF live a long and healthy life.

Lagunitas Brewery

Working local, Cufflinks, Beer cufflinksCrafty RascalComment

The Crafty Rascal has gotten an offer to design cufflinks using the Lagunitas beer caps. If you have not tried their beers you should. The many flavors appeal to every taste. Plus the dog logo is adorable. What blew me away is the many colors of the caps. There is the classic gold which many of us are used to. But I was thrilled to discover the red, blue, green and black options as well that coincide with the different flavors of beer. Now TheCraftyRascal offers Lagunitas Beer Cap Cufflinks with each of the colored caps. A favorite beer amongst the beer aficionados, I love that I am working with a California Brand. Beer Cap Cufflinks Made in California from a California Beer Cap packaged in 100% recycled made in the USA gift boxes. Now that's made in America.

The Lagunitas Brewery History

From points distant and beyond we all converged on Petaluma in 1993 and ’94 with an unenunciated desire to be more than we were before. The core of Lagunitas came from Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, Walker Creek, and the highlands of Quincy.

The Chicago contingent initiated the brewing and the gravitational effect of its suchness did the rest. We all loved the beer but the mission was larger than the ordinary joy of a hoppy-sweet quaff. It was driven unseen by an urge to communicate with people, to find our diasporidic tribe, and to connect with other souls adrift on a culture that had lost its center and spun its inhabitants to the four winds to wander lost and bereft with a longing to re-enter the light. Beer, we have learned, has always been a good lubricant for social intercourse!
— Lagunitas Brewery

Here are some photos of the cufflinks in the sun getting packaged up and ready to be shipped to the Petaluma tap room.

Blue Cufflinks Packaged for Shipment

The Lagunitas brewery expanded into Chicago this year. With the expansion TheCraftyRascal followed the brewery into Chicago. This year you can find the beer cufflinks here, at the Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, or at the Lagunitas Brewery in Chicago.

Now that's something to raise your glass to!

Drake's Beer Cufflinks

Crafty RascalComment

I love it when my customers ask me for a new product. The latest request was to work with Drake's Beer. Drake’s Brewing Company is an urban craft brewery operating in San Leandro, California since 1989. I looked around and happened to have two caps, I guess I tried the beer before. So here we are a new Beer Cap cufflink.

As I started to tune out and shift my peripheral hearing to the conversations near by the slogan a funny but ultra groovy and techy python popped into my head and would not leave me alone until my sister brought him to life so he could be a part of this cool long sleeve. Focus on Coffee and Experimentation

Crafty RascalComment

February Experimentation

TheCraftyRascal central focus is on Recycling and Sustainability. I use recycled wine and beer caps in my cufflinks. We thrive to use recycled packaging where possible. For the cufflinks we use 100% made in the USA gift boxes. To continue the business model to my daily life I try to produce cool artwork with recycled products. One of my last experiments was with coffee. Friends acquired a coffee bag that was just discarded and gave it to me. My first idea was to make cufflinks and those are still in the works but I decided to play around with paint. I used the textures of the coffee bag and the wording on the bag itself in the composition. Then I took some spent coffee granules and used those in the painting itself. Some amazing artwork flourished. Check them out on the right hand side.

The Crafty Rascal in San Francisco

Find TheCraftyRascal in San Francisco

The Crafty Rascal is now at Secession Art Gallery in Bernal Heights. The Gallery is a local San Francisco favorite that features artists and designers I admire so it was really cool to have The Crafty Cufflinks featured in this local favorite. Eden the curator has amassed an incredible selection of local jewelry, fabric designers as well as artists that she features on a rotating basis. My first problem of getting into Secession Art Gallery  was getting out without buying all of the cool designs in Eden's store. No doubt I will be back next month to replenish The Crafty Rascal and find some cool collectibles or fashions for myself.
